Technology allows the solitary reader to become a social reader and join a community of readers. Perhaps the book as we know it -- the portable bound pages -- may change, but that miraculous ability of authors to take the printed word and shape a vision, an understanding, and a story through the formation of letters is the true gift of writing and reading. The communion of writers and readers that has endured through centuries, across distances, and through translations, crossing boundaries of culture, economics, gender, age, and ethnicity, is the organic, living, and breathing creation we need to celebrate, name, and nurture. Whether the words are handwritten, composed on a typewriter, or keyed into an iPad, it is the written word and its ability to reach and touch the minds and experiences of others that is truly miraculous. Our essential work of turning kids on to reading has not changed. We can look at new technologies as competition for the time and attention of young people, or we can look for ways to harness these technologies to put more "books" in the hands of more readers. Handheld technologies and social media offer us the portability, connectivity, and sociability to accomplish that.
